Windows Notworking
I tried to break Windows XP SP2 and I couldn't. At least, not by doing what I was trying to do.
Now, I have never been able to get SMB working on my home network. Never. Not once. When I want to push files around, I use HTTP instead. But one of the reasons that this has been so hard is that, probably as a result of something I did long ago, NetBIOS over TCP/IP is completely nonexistent.
I bet Microsoft won't even consider life with a machine that doesn't have NetBT. I wager this because I have experienced how much of a pain in the ass it is to reinstall it.
I'll save you the trauma that I endured all night. If you're having problems with Windows Networking and nothing else seems to be the problem other than NetBIOS over TCP/IP, you should reinstall TCP/IP. In XP, this is impossible. So instead, you just reconfigure the TCP/IP protocol with factory defaults with the following command:
c:\>netsh int ip reset reset_tcp.log
Needless to say, make sure you've performed a pen and paper backup of your important network settings. (If I had a dime for each time I forgot what my ISP's nameservers' IPs were....)
With your TCP/IP settings flushed and reconfigured, you have to re-enter your setup, and anything you may have accidentally removed will be back. Problem solved. Pray you never need to figure this out for yourself. In case you're wondering, no. I still haven't gotten Windows networking to work on my home network. But at least I'm not getting System Error 1231 thrown at me anymore.
