The Latest Firefly Pipedream

The latest Firefly pipedream I've heard is that the success of iPod videos might lead to some pay-to-play iPod-exclusive content including, you guessed it, some resurrected TV shows.

Like I said: pipedream.

Now the theory itself is sound enough to warrant a startup or six. If you're not sure you like an iPod program, you buy one, it costs a couple of bucks. If you hate it, you delete it and move on with your life. If you love it, you almost automatically become a loyal customer, one who pays for the privilege of having regular, ad-free content. I think somebody might be able to make that business model work.

That somebody is not Joss Whedon. Sorry to say, Joss is a writer and a director. He's interested in telling stories, not drumming up venture capital. Even given this fact, Firefly fans don't need to be sold on the premise. At this point Joss could scrimp on the content and still have an audience. He could just point the camera at the actors as they did mundane things in a contemporary setting. Would I pay money to watch Nathan Fillion lounge around his house, eating soup while quietly watching the evening news?

If he was wearing suspenders while he did it I would.
