I Wish

I wish that users would understand that their passwords are case-sensitive.

I wish that users would understand that if they write a password down on a slip of paper and say "Here, make this my password, please," I'm going to follow the traditional rules of case detection for the English language: a lowercase 'k' has a much longer vertical stroke than a capital 'K'. A capital 'A' contains no round or curved segments. An 'S' the same size as your un-dotted 'J' will make me believe it to be capitalized. This is not rocket science, people, it's basic fucking penmanship. The letter 'l' is not the same as the numeral '1'. Make an effort to differentiate between them, you fucks.

I wish that users would understand that if everything, everything, everything on the whole network in all discovered and undiscovered dimensions is under "\\Server\users\", they should not call to complain when they start looking for their files under "\\Server\Admin\" and get Access Denied errors for their trouble. Seriously: how much dumber can you people get? On second thought, don't answer that. I don't want to know.

I wish more users were like the one I dealt with today, who shook my hand and thanked me for taking time out of my day to set her up with her communications necessities. It's my job, but it doesn't have to be a thankless one. I appreciate it when people appreciate it.

I wish users would understand that dragging a Windows shortcut from their Desktop to a network share does not magically make the program available to be used by everyone who clicks on it. If it were that easy, I'd never have to hand-hold someone through an MS Office install ever again.
