Lumps Upon Lumps

I have often wondered what those little bumpy parts on a woman's breast were. You know what I'm talking about: scattered across the areola are a few tiny little lumps, only a few millimeters in diameter and not nearly as pronounced as the nipple proper.

They seem very common, and though their distribution is asymmetrical, they certainly don't appear to be an indication of disease. So what the heck are those things, anyway?

Turns out they're glands. Medical science didn't even acknowledge their existence until the nineteenth century, so I don't feel bad about just learning what they're called until now.

Medical science prior to the 19th century was pretty shaky all around, really.
