On Diet Coke
A few years ago, I made the decision to switch from tasty Coca-Cola to Diet Coke and I lost five pounds almost immediately. That was probably the first time I ever saw a direct correlation between what I shove in my mouth and what my bathroom scale says. It makes sense that if you eat fatty foods and sugar you're going to put on extra pounds, but seeing a deliberate map from "cut 32 ounces of sugar water out of your daily intake" to "lose lotsa weight" really drives the point home.
Diet Coke tastes drastically different from regular Coke, and it's a flavor that takes some getting used to. Tonight, I realized part-way through savoring my can of caffeine-free Diet Coke that I honest-to-God liked the taste of it. This wasn't a forced displacement, like a smoker trying to crave gum instead, but a genuine appreciation for false sweetness. I used to not like Diet Coke. Now I do. Guess you can used to just about anything.

It's that high-fructose corn syrup. I've also stopped keeping soda in my house (I get by on home brewed Iced Tea - never could stand the taste of nutrisweet) and I've seen a quick drop in my weight as well.
