Never Going to Happen
In the last paragraphs of Adam Sternbergh's article The Television Revolution is at the Gates (in this week's New York magazine) he puts forth a drool-worthy idea. Joss Whedon asks one million browncoats to shell out $39.99 a piece to make another season of Firefly, independently controlled by him, sans network, and broadcast to the paying subscribers over the Internet.
Sound too 1996 for you? Probably. Will it ever happen? Not a chance. I think Firefly's purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others. It won't be long before someone famous actually makes a business model out of this: James Cameron or Robert Rodriguez or Rob Thomas. Who knows? I wouldn't pay $39.99 to help create a series I just may very well hate, but I'd definitely pay $39.99 to help revive a series I know I like. Profit 2005, anyone?
