CNN.com - Gates pushes computer careers

Bill Gates has been making the rounds at college campuses stumping for the merits of careers in [computer] science.

CNN.com - Gates pushes computer careers - Oct 14, 2005: "Microsoft spokeswoman Ginny Terzano said the speeches at all six schools had the same goal: 'Getting good young people interested in the technical sciences for great careers in the industry.'"

You know, it's a kick in the teeth to read about Bill's little campaign on all the news sites when I have tried for years to get that little start-up of his to notice me. I mean, what kind of message does this send to me? That for all my skills and experience, I'm just not what they're looking for.

How prophetic that the book I hate most from my youth would be the one upon which I should pattern my life. Comments about Microsoft's lament that a good man is hard to find make me angry. When the anger subsides, only the facts remain: I must have absolutely no marketable job skills that companies like Microsoft would want. If I had any, they would have pursued my numerous inquiries by now. Then again, any other companies would have shown an interest in me as well. (And no, full-time Solaris administrator does not count.)

It must be Monday, because I'm contemplating grad school again. This time, however, I'm thinking CS is not my calling. (It sure as hell ain't making much of a career.) Maybe English. Hey. Maybe MIS. Hmm....
