Hey. Ho. Let's Code.
Interesting post by Dan Dupont at Defense Tech today, pointing out an article that suggests punk rockers would make good program managers.
You heard me.
Punk at the Pentagon: "'Punk is primarily a do-it-yourself genre....'" and "Punk rock, the authors conclude, 'is loud and in-your-face, unapologetic and fearless. We need more of that attitude around here.'"
I suppose people have a strong image in their minds of their typical UNIX sysadmin: a long-haired, bespectacled guy with a degree from Berkeley who wears Ramones shirts and hiking boots, even though he doesn't, technically, ever go hiking. I'll explain the boot thing later, but this is why we wear the shirts. UNIX isn't just an operating system, it's an attitude, and it's usually life-comprehensive. By this, I mean that a guy who goes to the trouble to write scripts and cronjobs to go out, find the latest patches, grab them, compile them, sandbox test them, and then e-mail him the results is likely to apply the same kind of engineering rigor to projects at home. "We need more of that attitude around here." I think we need more of that attitude everywhere.
Also, "I Want to Be Sedated" is just a damn good song.
