New rsync: version 2.6.4, protocol 29

Title says it all: new version of network file transfer software rsync is available. Go get it.

rsync version 2.6.4 has updated the new version of the rsync protocol. I was worried, given a recent statement made on the rsync announce mailing list, that protocol 29 was incompatible with earlier versions.

How silly. What the warning meant was that protocol 29 was incompatible with other earlier versions of protocol 29: they made big changes to p29 between when they started tinking with p28 and when they stopped tinkering with p29 long enough to release a stable version of rsync. What this means to you the end user is very little: like all other versions of rsync (that I've ever used at any rate), can play well with earlier versions. rsync is very much a reliability application. To this end, it has always proven itself to be backwards compatible with older versions of itself.

This does not, however, prevent me from installing the newest version on everything I own as soon as I can.
