A Kind of Demented Counterpoint
In 2001, David Byrne released Look into the Eyeball, an album that is a juxtaposition of morose introspection and fun, happy songs. On the dark side you have ominous tracks like "The Accident" ("I can see detectives are sifting through the wreckage we have made"), and on the light side are tracks like "Smile" ("Children laugh telling jokes 'til their eyes are red, people feel so good").
It's definitely a summer sort of album. It has rich tones and a solid beat, but is not devoid of several soft and feathery parts, too.
I enjoy listening to it today for no reason other than it provides a sharp contrast to the arctic blast that Cleveland is getting right now. It's white outside, and much of the snow has been moving perfectly horizontally all day long. Weathermen said "an inch of accumulation". Liars.
But inside my lab, where there are no windows and the only lighting is fluorescent, it's June: sunny and warm. I'm in the shade right now, enjoying a cool breeze on the back of my neck and wondering if the weather is right for eating dinner outside tonight.
Sigh.
