CNN says: Get off the IE treadmill
Saying that Internet Explorer is dangerous is a little like saying that downing a full bottle of vodka then running around your house naked, greased up, and wielding a chainsaw is dangerous. It goes without saying. Now, even CNN is getting in on the action. So far, the only people saying that Internet Explorer isn't a huge liability all work for Microsoft.
Even Robert Scoble, a guy who gets his paycheck by trying to convince people to use Microsoft products, openly admits he only uses IE 60% of the time. You might think this isn't so bad a percentage, but it's like the CEO of Ford Motor Company saying "I always drive a Ford to work. But on weekends, nothing beats the smooth ride and great mileage I get from my Mitsubishi Eclipse." I think it's important for people to know when software is so fundamentally bad that the people at the company who make it use something else.
In the last few days several organizations have started explicitly suggesting you look for a better browser: The United States Government (courtesy the Office of Homeland Security), CNN, and even my favorite low-profile out-of-the-way website, Empornium. If you know of others, tell me. These aren't rival companies, folks. These are all places that really shouldn't give a damn what kind of browser you use. And yet they're taking a stance and telling you to find something better. That's how important it is that people move away from Internet Explorer in droves and never look back.
Here, I'll make this easy for you. These are links to some very nice browsers that are not horrendous security hazards on the Windows platform. Download, install, and go.
Use anything but IE. Your safety depends on it. Don't believe anyone who gets a paycheck from Microsoft when they tell you the browser is fine and that the latest patch fixes everything. They're half right: the latest patch will fix everything until the next vulnerability is found. And one will be found. And you'll go through it all again, and again they'll say that the latest patch fixes everything. It's just a cycle of bugs and breaches. Get off the treadmill. I've just shown you how.
